Blippar Creates an AR Monster: Comic-Con 2014

Comic-Con International - the annual San Diego convention of all things comic book, founded in 1970 - is about making the impossible possible. From giant robots and zombies to all manner of superhero, hundreds of thousands of attendees flock to the event each year for experiences that bring a world of fantastic imagination straight into real life, right before their eyes. (July 24 - 27 in San Diego)

This year, Blippar is not only attending the event but also featuring in it. And we’ll be helping to make the world-famous meet-up feel even more like a science fiction movie by providing attendees with the opportunity to use our AR technology to further enhance some of Comic-Con’s most eye-catching features….

Special effects studio Legacy Effects is internationally renowned for building larger-than-life, fully moving animatronic creations. This week, in partnership with Blippar, WIRED and the Stan Winston School, Legacy is unveiling its newest project: a 14-foot-tall monster called Bodock.

By blipping Bodock’s arms, head and other body parts with their smartphones, tablets and wearables, attendees will trigger an AR experience through which they can learn more about Bodock, and what went into creating this lifelike, 2,000-pound behemoth.

As well as the blippable beast, Comic-Con attendees can also pick up free blippable t-shirts and other interactive treats, and catch a live demo from the famous Mythbuster, Adam Savage.

Additionally, HBO has partnered with Blippar to bring its “Love Child” to life at Comic-Con. By blipping handouts being distributed throughout show, viewers can learn more about the acclaimed documentary and share an immersive experience with their friends.
