Blippar Creates First True AR Games for Google Glass & Announces Launch of Gaming Platform

Playing 3D AR games on Google Glass

At Mobile World Congress earlier this year we unveiled the Blippar app on Google Glass, marking the first time image-recognition capabilities had been fully functional on the device. Today, Blippar CEO Rish Mitra demonstrated another first for Glass: true augmented reality gaming, made possible through Blippar's proprietary new gesture-recognition technology. In addition, Rish announced the game as part of a bigger company initiative: the launch of Blippar's new gaming platform.

Presented today at the Augmented World Expo, Blippar's Games for Glass platform is an entirely new gaming experience that enables players to bring the world around them to digital life and interact with it in meaningful ways. Wearing Glass, users open the Blippar app, triggering a virtual interface with which they interact via their hands and the headset itself.

In Rish's demo, Glass was used to blipp a poster depicting dozens of asteroids, which then came ‘flying’ towards the player, who used their hands to swipe them away and defend themselves.

Speaking about augmented reality and gaming on Glass, Rish said: ‘Consumers are becoming more comfortable with augmented reality experiences, and are now actively seeking out new ways to engage with the technology through platforms like Google Glass.

'Just like the early smartphone days, games for wearables are a natural “testing ground” for innovation, which is why we’re investing in the space through the launch of our new, gesture-powered gaming platform. By adding this new area of expertise, we’re expanding our footprint in the market, and ensuring the Blippar brand is synonymous with AR experiences of all kinds.’

Games are just the tip of the iceberg for our gesture-recognition technology - stay tuned for more. In the meantime, Glass owners will soon be able to download the Blippar app in the Glass store to bring hundreds of print images and products to life.
